What types of EMFs do power lines produce?

The alternating current of overhead (and underground) power lines produce two main kinds of “extremely low frequency” EMF radiation:

• Magnetic fields
• Electric fields

While both are types of radiation are present, the magnetic fields are the primary concern of testing as the fields are difficult and costly to try and shield against.  This is especially relevant for homes or apartments in the inspection phase of the purchasing process. 

Are these magnetic fields a health risk?

We believe the scientific literature shows that elevated magnetic fields can be a health risk and should be something a homeowner considers along with other environmental testing (air, water, chemicals, etc…).

How do I test EMFs from power lines?

The presence and strength of these magnetic fields can be determined by using a gaussmeter. 

To test for electric fields, you’ll need an electric field meter.
